About Voxel Shooter: Gameplay & Details

Voxel Shooter is a side-scrolling roguelite shmup where every run is a new loadout, every boss hits harder, and every friend on the couch makes it wilder. Grab a controller and fight your way through waves of defenders across alien worlds — together or alone.

Team up with up to 3 friends in local co-op. More pilots means more bullets, more chaos, and more fights over who buys the last upgrade. No friends nearby? Steam Remote Play Together lets you play with the same couch co-op feel — online.

Enemies resist their own color. Switch between Red, Blue, Green, and Purple to exploit weaknesses and control the screen. Each element carries up to 3 weapons — but here’s the choice that defines your run: stack all 3 for a wall of bullets, or invest in fewer weapons and push them to max power.

With upgrade variants that reshape how each weapon behaves, no two builds play the same.

Between waves, spend your credits on drones, dash boosts, shields, and more. Keep your combo alive (up to x15) to earn more credits — but a single hit cuts your combo in half. And you only have 2 HP.

After each level, pick a difficulty modifier: more enemies, boosted elements, tougher waves. Each modifier earns Fame — and Fame unlocks the final boss. Push hard and face the endgame early, or play it safe and stack your build first.

Cleared the run? Start a new Ascension. 10 tiers of escalating chaos: every two tiers, the final boss transforms — and in between, it comes back even stronger. Only the most relentless pilots see them all.

Three bosses stalk your run — tougher every time they reappear. Reach the endgame and face a final boss that evolves with your Ascension tier. Learn their patterns. Exploit their openings. Don’t blink. Your planet is dying. You found a better one. The locals disagree.

Couch co-op support for 1-4 players is the design standout social commitment — contemporary shmups typically prioritize online multiplayer or pure solo experiences, but Stase Games has committed to the couch co-op tradition that genuine friend-group play sessions depend on. The design’s editorial commitment to this distinctive mechanic distinguishes Voxel Shooter from generic shmup releases that rely on pure content quantity.

The design tradition echoes the source tradition where meaningful player agency matters more than pure content volume. Players who commit to the design commitment discover the compound depth beneath the surface-level presentation, and that discovery process creates the sustained engagement that memorable indie releases generate through their editorial commitment across the campaign structure.

The Ascension Floor Structure and the Editorial Voice

The ascension floor structure gives the design meaningful campaign framework — 10 ascension floors provide progressive difficulty across the roguelite progression where compound achievement creates the reward loop. The atmospheric commitment gives the design’s mechanical decisions meaningful narrative weight beyond pure abstraction, and players who engage with the setting seriously find their gameplay experiences resonating with the studio’s editorial vision across the campaign.

The tonal choices distinguish Voxel Shooter from generic shmup releases that treat setting as decorative wrapper around gameplay mechanics. Stase Games has clearly invested in the atmospheric craft as primary editorial dimension rather than as budget compromise, and the consistency of that commitment supports the compound engagement that memorable indie releases sustain across long-form community retention.

The Verdict on Voxel Shooter

Yes if shmup games are a comfort genre and you appreciate indie studio editorial commitment. Yes if you enjoyed Nova Drift, Cuphead, or contemporary shmup releases and want another entry with distinctive editorial framing. Yes if 90+ upgrade catalog appeals to you as build variety commitment appeals to you as design commitment. Less yes if you prefer heavier production values or if shmup design feels underwhelming for your preferences. For the shmup audience at affordable indie pricing, this is a confident recommendation.
