World of Warcraft Beginner Guide — Starting From Nothing in 2026

Anyone searching for a World of Warcraft beginner guide hits the same wall: the game is twenty-two years old, has fourteen expansions, and explains almost none of it. This guide is the decision tree — what to click, what to buy, what to skip.

World of Warcraft beginner guide — Midnight expansion art
Midnight launched 2 March 2026 and raised the level cap from 80 to 90. It is the expansion you will be playing.

Step 1: Play the free trial first

Cost: nothing. Time: 2–3 hours to know if you like it.

Blizzard’s Free Trial has no time limit and runs to level 20. Download it, finish the tutorial island, decide.

  • Disk space needed: roughly 100GB. The trial downloads the full client.
  • What is locked: guilds, trading, auction house, mail. Gold caps at 10.
  • What is not locked: every class, every race, the whole 1–20 experience.

Verdict: if the combat does not click by level 20, stop. Paying will not change it.

Step 2: Know what it costs before you commit

  • Subscription: US$14.99 per month. Required past level 20.
  • Midnight expansion: US$49.99 base edition. Required for current content.
  • Older expansions: free. Classic through Dragonflight come with the sub.
  • WoW Token: pay the sub with in-game gold. Real, but not realistic for a new player.

Total to start properly: about US$65 for the first month.

Step 3: Pick a class you will enjoy pressing

Every class clears every piece of content. Balance shifts each patch. Ignore tier lists.

  • Want space to think while you learn? Ranged damage — Mage, Hunter, Warlock.
  • Want to try everything without rerolling? Druid or Paladin. Both tank, heal and deal damage on one character.
  • Want to be needed in groups? Tank or healer. Faster queues, more responsibility.
  • Want the new thing? Demon Hunter’s Devourer spec arrived with Midnight.
Exile’s Reach — the World of Warcraft tutorial island
Exile’s Reach is the only part of WoW built for someone who has never played it. Ten to fifteen minutes, and it teaches combat, questing and your first dungeon.

Step 4: What a World of Warcraft beginner guide should tell you to skip

This is the single most useful rule for a new player.

  • 1–20: Exile’s Reach, then the follow-on zone. Free trial covers this.
  • 20–80: the game routes you into Dragonflight content. Just follow the quests.
  • 80–90: the Midnight campaign in Quel’Thalas. This is the current game.

Do not research talent builds at level 30, farm old reputations, or chase gear from expansions three cycles old. None of it carries forward.

Time to 90: 15–30 hours from scratch. Every Midnight edition includes an Enhanced Level 80 Character Boost if you would rather skip it — though a built-in recap questline runs 70 to 80 in about two hours and is worth playing.

Step 5: Choose a realm and know your ping

  • Pick a populated realm. Faster queues, busier auction house, guilds recruiting.
  • Playing from Southeast Asia? There is no local data centre. You will connect to Oceanic or US servers.
  • Expect 150–200ms. Fine for questing, dungeons and normal raiding. A handicap in high-end PvP.
World of Warcraft endgame in Azeroth
At 90 the game changes shape. You stop following quests and start choosing what to repeat each week.

Step 6: Pick one endgame, not all four

  • Delves — solo or small group, Tiers 1 to 11. The friendliest starting point WoW has ever had.
  • Mythic+ — timed five-player dungeons, escalating difficulty. Needs a group.
  • Raiding — four difficulty tiers. The easiest queues automatically.
  • PvP — battlegrounds and arenas, separate gear track.

Start with Delves. They exist so solo players have somewhere to go, and they teach the season’s mechanics without a group waiting on you.

Two systems worth knowing on day one

  • Warband. Every character on your account shares achievements, transmog and most currencies. Time on an alt is not wasted.
  • No combat add-ons. Midnight disabled them inside instanced content. You are not expected to install a stack of third-party tools before your first raid.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to start? No. Every expansion resets gear progression. A new player at season start is not far behind a veteran.

Retail or Classic? Retail for the current game. Classic for the 2004 design — slower, harsher, more dependent on other people. One subscription covers both.

Can I play solo? Yes. Delves exist for exactly that. Raids and Mythic+ still need groups.

What did Midnight actually add? Player housing, the Haranir allied race, the Devourer spec for Demon Hunters, and four zones in Quel’Thalas with a rebuilt Silvermoon City. Skyriding works from arrival with no unlock grind.
