Sublight is on Steam in Early Access at $11.99. It is a bullet heaven in space — you captain a warship and cut through escalating waves rather than dodging them on foot.

Bullet heaven, but you are a warship

The genre is well established by now — Vampire Survivors and its descendants — and the variation here is scale. Commanding a ship rather than a character changes how upgrades read: arsenal instead of abilities.

Builds are the replay hook

CODEBREW point to unlocking new ships and experimenting with builds. That is the load-bearing part of any bullet heaven: the first hour is fun regardless, and whether hour twenty is depends entirely on how differently the builds play.

Early Access at full-ish price

Twelve dollars with no launch discount, and unfinished. For a genre where the competition includes some very cheap and very complete games, that is a firm ask — worth reading current reviews before buying.

The genre is crowded, which raises the bar

Bullet heavens have gone from novelty to established category since Vampire Survivors in 2022. That means a new one is not competing on novelty — it is competing against games that have had years of balancing, and several of which cost under five dollars.

Sublight prices itself at twelve, in Early Access, without a launch discount. That is a confident position, and it only holds up if the ship-based framing changes how a run feels rather than just how it looks.

Ships are a real design opportunity

Piloting a warship rather than a character opens up things the genre usually cannot do: weapon hardpoints with arcs of fire, hull versus shield as separate resources, mass affecting how quickly you can reposition. Whether Sublight uses any of that is the thing worth checking in reviews.

The alternative is that the ship is a reskin of a character, which would make this a competent entry in a genre that already has several better-established options.

Ships are the meta-progression

Beyond the per-run upgrades, CODEBREW describe unlocking new ships entirely. That is the layer that decides whether a bullet heaven holds attention past the first evening — run-level upgrades make a single session fun, but a new hull changes how the next twenty play.

They also promise countless builds, which is the standard claim in this genre and the hardest to verify from a store page. Early Access reviews will tell you whether the arsenal genuinely branches or whether most runs converge on the same two weapons.
