Re:Night is the tactical roguelike deckbuilder Seahorse Games has been quietly building for three years, and after a strong Steam Next Fest demo showing in October 2025, the game shipped to Steam on 4 August 2026 published by HARRISONWORLD CO., LTD. This is an indie release with a genuinely different structural hook — a three-character squad plus a chess-like grid plus a deckbuilding loop, all wrapped in a dark fantasy town-locked-in-endless-night setting. If Slay the Spire ate Into the Breach, this would be the result.

About Re:Night: Gameplay & Details

Travel to a mysterious town, break the endless cycle of night with your own hands, and restore dawn to the world.
Tactical combat introduces strategic mechanics such as frontline and backline positioning, flanking, blocking, and protecting allies. Combined with elemental counters, equipment, and item effects, these systems create countless opportunities for powerful combinations.
Command three characters simultaneously in every battle, each with a distinct role. Whether focusing on burst damage, battlefield control, healing, or environmental interactions, careful coordination and party synergy are the keys to victory.
Fire, Water, and Grass form a cyclical elemental counter system. Exploit elemental advantages to unleash devastating critical hits and deal massive damage.
Coordinate your three characters to trigger elemental critical hits while positioning them to deny your enemies the same advantage. Every move requires careful planning, but victory also depends on adapting to an ever-changing battlefield.
Every character features unique talents and an exclusive pool of character-specific cards. Combine more than 300 cards with over 200 pieces of equipment and items to create more than 20 distinct builds for any three-character party.
Become an unstoppable brawler, a demolition expert, or a relentless lancer. Even the stone walls of the battlefield can become powerful weapons. In Re:Night, your imagination is your greatest strength.
Undo your last action, rewind to the start of the current turn, or even restart the battle from the very beginning at any time. Never let a single mistake ruin your adventure, and face unfamiliar enemies with the freedom to explore different strategies.
Study enemy behavior, experiment with different positioning, card sequences, and elemental combinations, then use each rewind to test new ideas, refine your strategy, and discover your own path to victory.
Every run offers a fresh adventure, with diverse maps, random events, challenging battles, and unexpected encounters waiting to be discovered.
Begin your journey beside the stream outside the town, venture through the dangers hidden within the village, and ultimately ascend to a castle shrouded in mystery. With every adventure, you’ll unlock new content, playable characters, and even greater challenges to overcome.
Each character has their own memory fragments, known as Chrono Shards. Collect them to unlock hidden cards and equipment, expanding your tactical options with every discovery. Gather every Chrono Shard to uncover the truth behind the endless cycle of night.

Re:Night Studio Background: Seahorse Games After Three Years
Seahorse Games is a small indie developer that spent roughly three years building Re:Night, according to the studio’s own dev blog posts. HARRISONWORLD CO., LTD is the publisher — a smaller-tier publishing partner focused on strategy and roguelike indie titles. The developer’s
Three years of solo or independent development for a mechanically ambitious roguelike deckbuilder is the kind of quiet grind that separates finish-worthy indie releases from the ones that never leave demo state. Re:Night shipping to 1.0 with the systems its demo previewed is confirmation that the studio delivered on what they promised in October 2025.
Re:Night Combat Design: Deckbuilding Meets Grid Tactics
The core loop combines two design lineages. Deckbuilding follows the Slay the Spire template: build your deck over the course of each run, choose upgrades on level-up, adjust your strategy around the cards and characters you have at that moment. Grid tactics follow the Into the Breach template: chess-like battlefield, positional decisions matter, every unit move has cascading consequences.
What makes Re:Night mechanically distinct is the three-character squad system. Any combination of three characters creates more than 20 unique synergies, meaning the “deck” you’re building isn’t just cards — it’s the cards plus the character interactions plus the grid positioning. That combinatorial depth is where the game either becomes genuinely deep or feels overloaded, and the Steam Next Fest demo reception suggested Seahorse landed on the “genuinely deep” side.
Re:Night Setting: A Town Locked in Endless Night

The narrative frame is dark fantasy: a mysterious town trapped in an endless loop of night, and the player’s job is to break the cycle and bring dawn back. That’s a compact narrative hook that gives the deckbuilding loop thematic weight without requiring cutscene-heavy storytelling. The dark fantasy aesthetic aligns with the roguelike-deckbuilder tradition (Slay the Spire‘s Spire, Monster Train‘s hellscape) while adding a specific mythological identity.
Character options include multiple archetypes designed for different team compositions — direct damage, support, control, or slower tactical plays. The story unfolds through the run structure rather than being told through cutscenes, which is the correct design for a title where players will make many run attempts.
Re:Night Content at Launch: Runs, Bosses, and Replayability
Re:Night ships with:
- 3-character team system with 20+ synergies across combinations
- Chess-like tactical grid for positional combat
- Deckbuilding progression across runs with meta-progression persistence
- Boss encounters that require specific tactical adaptations
- Multiple biomes and battlefield layouts
- Emergent freedom — the developer’s stated design goal is combinatorial variety over scripted encounters
The Steam page lists no user reviews at launch — a common state for niche indie roguelike releases where the first wave of reviews arrives 2-4 weeks post-launch as the audience accumulates run hours. Expect the first meaningful review batch by mid-August 2026.
How Re:Night Compares to the Current Crop
The roguelike deckbuilder space is saturated in 2026. Slay the Spire remains the reference point. Monster Train, Balatro, Inscryption, StarVaders, NET.CRAWL, and dozens of other titles have carved specialised niches. Re:Night‘s specific angle — three-character squad, grid tactics, dark fantasy narrative — is differentiated.
The bet Seahorse is making is that deckbuilder players who have tired of the standard turn-based-vs-single-enemy structure will find the grid tactics layer refreshing. That audience exists but is smaller than the pure deckbuilder audience — Re:Night will need strong word-of-mouth to find them.
Re:Night Pricing and Demo Availability

Base price and launch discount details are not confirmed at time of publication window. A free demo has been available on Steam since October 2025 and remains accessible — that’s the correct way to try Re:Night before committing at full price. The demo gives a comprehensive slice of the deckbuilding loop and grid tactics, enough to make an informed purchase decision.
The developer maintains active Steam Community and Discord channels for player feedback. Indie roguelikes benefit enormously from active community engagement in the first months post-launch, and Seahorse’s transparent development style suggests they’ll continue that engagement through 1.0 and beyond.
Re:Night Verdict: 8/10 and a Deckbuilder Worth the Three Years of Development
Re:Night is the kind of indie release Steam is for — a niche mechanical hook, three years of quiet development, a completed 1.0 launch, and a demo that removes buying risk. The three-character squad plus chess-like grid plus deckbuilding loop is mechanically ambitious for indie scope, and the Steam Next Fest reception suggested Seahorse landed the execution correctly. Try the demo first. If the combinatorial three-squad synergies click, this is the deckbuilder to prioritise in the current release window.
