Small Mill released Path of Idle: Old Gods Rising on Steam on 12 August 2026. It is a Lovecraftian idle RPG, and the studio is unusually direct about who it is for: dark fantasy fans who want the gear-building depth of the genre without the mechanical execution that normally comes attached to it.
Serving the Old God on Blackreef Isle
You play a servant of the Old God, tasked with building a town on the sealed grounds of Blackreef Isle. The loop starts there — grow a cult, expand its influence, and recruit from a population of exiled criminals, selecting the ones carrying hidden potential.
Those recruits are then transformed. Awakening them with the blood of the Old God turns them into Godsworn, units you send out to wage war and who grow stronger through slaughter and trials. The endgame runs through the Void, where you face the Outer Gods to reclaim sealed power. Break every seal and the Old God rises from beneath the island.

Idle auto-battle as the core design choice
Combat is full-auto and real-time. Small Mill describes it as freeing your hands completely, which is the whole thesis of the release rather than an incidental convenience feature.
The framing on the store page is pointed: this is built for players tired of intense mechanical operations, letting you enjoy assembling top-tier gear without tedious controls. That repositions where the challenge sits. You are not being tested on reflexes or input timing — you are being tested on build construction, and the auto-battler is the readout that tells you whether your build works.
The systems stack underneath the idle layer
For an idle game the feature list is dense. Listed systems include loot farming, chests, team strategy, town building, gear crafting, Runewords, stages, towers, realms and seasons.
Runewords in particular signal the lineage — it is a term borrowed straight from classic action RPG gear crafting, where specific runes inserted in a specific order into the right item produce a named effect. Its presence alongside a seasonal structure suggests Small Mill is building for long-term play with periodic resets rather than a single finite campaign.
Research and progression fan out across the town-building layer too, so the idle time is meant to feed multiple parallel tracks rather than a single power number.

An accessibility set that matches the design
The Steam feature list is worth reading closely here, because for once the accessibility options align exactly with the game’s stated philosophy. The listing includes a Mouse Only Option, Playable without Timed Input and Save Anytime, alongside custom volume controls.
A game that advertises itself as free of demanding input, and then actually ships mouse-only play and no timed-input requirement, is being consistent rather than just marketing a mood. Steam Achievements are supported.
This is a single-player release available on both Windows and macOS. Language support is narrow — English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese only. Steam genre tags are Adventure, Casual, Indie, RPG and Strategy.

Where the price lands
Path of Idle: Old Gods Rising is on Steam at $9.99 checked against the store listing on 13 August 2026.
One point of clarification worth making, since the surrounding coverage has been muddled: the recent update announcements circulating for this game were for its demo build, not the full release. The full version is what launched on 12 August. If you tried the demo earlier and are wondering whether those patch notes applied to the paid game, they did not.
Full details are on the official Steam store page.
