Every MMO player outside North America and Western Europe eventually asks the same question, and almost every answer they find is wrong. Buy a better router. Close Chrome. Pay for a gaming VPN. Switch to a 1Gbps plan. Some of that helps at the margins. None of it addresses the thing that sets your ping, which is decided before your connection leaves your country and has nothing to do with the equipment in your house.
Your latency is mostly distance. A packet travelling through fibre moves at roughly two-thirds the speed of light, and real network routes are never straight lines. If the server is 9,000km away, there is a floor beneath which your ping cannot go, and no purchase moves it. Understanding which part of your problem is distance and which part is genuinely fixable is the difference between spending money usefully and spending it for nothing.
Latency, packet loss and jitter are three separate problems
These get used interchangeably and they should not be. Latency is round-trip time in milliseconds, and it is mostly geography. Packet loss is packets that never arrive and have to be resent — this is what produces rubber-banding, where your character snaps backwards. Jitter is latency that varies from moment to moment.
Jitter is the one most people misdiagnose. A steady 180ms is playable in almost any MMO, because your client can predict consistently and the game compensates. A connection swinging between 60ms and 200ms is far worse to play on despite the lower average, because nothing can be predicted. If your symptom is stutter rather than sluggishness, you are chasing jitter or loss, and lowering your average ping will not fix it.
Server location is the ceiling, and most games will not tell you where they are
Final Fantasy XIV is the clearest worked example because Square Enix publishes its structure. The game has four physical regions — North America, Europe, Japan and Oceania — and your Home World sits in exactly one of them. Before the Oceanian data centre opened in early 2022, Australian and New Zealand players had no option but to play on Japanese Worlds and absorb the full Pacific round trip. When Materia launched, those players saw latency drop by well over a hundred milliseconds without changing anything about their home network.

That is the whole principle in one example. A hundred milliseconds appeared out of nowhere because a building got closer. Nothing the players did mattered; where the hardware sat did.
Guild Wars 2 shows the opposite case. ArenaNet operates North American and European data centres and nothing in Asia-Pacific, which is why Australian players consistently report 200–280ms and Southeast Asian players report worse. That is not a routing fault anyone can repair. It is 13,000km of ocean, and ArenaNet has shown no sign of changing it in over a decade.
Find out where the servers are before you commit a character
This is the single most valuable thing in this guide, and it takes ten minutes. Before investing a few hundred hours in a game, find out which physical regions it hosts in, and whether you get to choose.
Games that host in Singapore give Southeast Asian players roughly 80–120ms, which is comfortable for everything short of competitive PvP. Games that route the same players to Japan add several thousand kilometres. Games that only host in North America and Europe put everyone in Asia-Pacific, South America, the Middle East and Africa on the wrong side of an ocean permanently.
The same logic applies anywhere outside the two core regions. A player in São Paulo, Johannesburg, Dubai or Warsaw faces the identical question with different numbers. “Asia servers” or “global launch” in a press release tells you nothing — ask which city.
Region transfers usually do not do what people think
Most MMOs offer some way to play on another region, and it is worth understanding what that actually gets you. Final Fantasy XIV’s Data Center Travel is the instructive case: travelling connects you to the visited data centre, so an Oceanian player visiting a North American data centre plays at North American latency for the duration. It is a feature for playing with friends and using other market boards, not a latency fix.
It is also queue-based and capacity-limited at busy times. If you consistently play on a distant region, you are queueing for the privilege of worse ping. One genuine exception: if you have permanently moved continents, a Home World transfer is the only change that lowers your ping every session, and it is worth paying for.
What genuinely helps, in order of value
1. Plug in an ethernet cable. Free or near enough, and it removes the most common source of jitter. Wi-Fi latency varies with interference, distance and how many devices share the band. If a cable is impossible, use 5GHz rather than 2.4GHz, keep line of sight to the router, and avoid powerline adapters — they are convenient and inconsistent.
2. Run a traceroute during a bad session, not a good one. If the delay appears on the first hop, the problem is inside your house. If it appears as traffic leaves your country, it is your ISP’s routing. If it only appears near the destination, it is distance and you are done.
3. Check whether your ISP is the outlier. Two connections in the same building can have noticeably different ping to the same game, because one provider peers more directly with the host. If your ping is far worse than friends playing the same game locally, routing is the likely cause and switching provider is a real option.
4. Trial a GPN, but only if step 2 showed bad routing. Services like ExitLag and NoPing route your traffic through their own network, which can bypass a poor path your ISP chose. That is a genuine fix for a genuine problem. What they cannot do is reduce distance — if your ping to Tokyo is high because Tokyo is far away, an extra hop makes it worse. Use the free trial, and if nothing improves in the first session, cancel.
What does not help, whatever you have been told
A faster internet plan. Bandwidth and latency are different measurements. MMOs use very little bandwidth. A 100Mbps line and a 1Gbps line have identical ping to the same server, and upgrading buys you nothing.
A new router, unless your current one is genuinely failing or your Wi-Fi is congested. Routers cannot shorten distance.
Gaming mice, keyboards or monitors. These affect the milliseconds between your hand and your PC, which is a different budget of time entirely. Buy them for feel and features. They will not change your ping by a single millisecond.
Closing background applications, in almost all cases. Unless something is actively saturating your upload, it is not your ping.
How much latency actually matters
Less than the forums suggest, and it depends heavily on the game’s design. MMOs built around a global cooldown tolerate far more latency than shooters. Final Fantasy XIV queues your next action if you press it slightly early — a window widely documented at around half a second — which absorbs a meaningful amount of network delay before you feel anything.
That forgiveness is real and it has limits. The limits are exactly where high-end play lives: savage and ultimate raiding, rated PvP, anything where a tight rotation is worth measurable damage. For questing, dungeons and normal raiding, 150–200ms is genuinely fine and millions of people play that way every day.
The honest summary
If you play from outside North America or Western Europe, accept that a proportion of your ping is permanent and stop paying to fix it. Plug in a cable, run a traceroute before you buy anything, and check where a game hosts before you invest hundreds of hours in it. That last habit will save you more frustration than every other item on this list combined.
And if a game’s servers are on the other side of the world, the honest answer is that there is no fix — only a decision about whether the game is worth playing at that latency. Often it is. Sometimes it is not, and knowing which before you start is the entire point.
