Gods and Kings launched on Steam on June 27, 2026 from Xuanjin Studio as a Free-to-Play release, a Greek mythology card-collection RPG that combines real-time strategy, card collection, and role-playing mechanics into a single Free-to-Play package. Players take the role of heroes who manipulate the power of Rune to summon armies and cast magic across stories drawn from classical mythology — the Twelve Trials of Hercules, the search for the Golden Fleece, the Trojan Horse — each adapted into game scenarios that follow the historical narrative sequence. The release positions itself as a free trial with DLC monetisation rather than ad-supported free-to-play, which signals more confidence in the underlying content than typical mobile-style free releases.

About Gods and Kings: Gameplay & Details
"Gods and Kings" is based on classical Greek mythological stories such as "Perseus","Metamorphosis" and "Homer’s Epic" . In the game, you will experience the classical stories of "Twelve trials of Hercules", "Searching for Golden Fleece", "Trojan Horse" one by one according to historical time sequence, and eventually control the power of monsters, heroes, gods and magic to create a new world. Right now, you may download it for a free trial, and DLCs will be charged.
Long, long ago, Titan ruled the earth. Titan was a powerful group of great gods, but it was their three sons who ended their rule: Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. Zeus became the king of gods and ruled the heavens; Poseidon became the Lord of the sea; and Hades dominated the underground. Thereafter, Prometheus, the God of prophecy, and Athena, the goddess of wisdom, created man with earth. After thousands of years of human reproduction on the earth’s surface, millions of people gathered together to build many city-states. Sometimes gods exert their divine power on the surface of the earth to make humans fear them. But with the increasing wisdom and power, human beings began to hope that they would no longer be dominated by the gods.

Digging into Gods and Kings
The core loop alternates between hero collection, army summoning, and real-time mythological combat. Players build their roster of heroes from the Greek mythological pantheon, each with their own ability sets, magical specialities, and tactical roles. Combat encounters draw on the hero roster plus summoned armies, with the Rune system providing the magical resource that powers the deeper abilities. The card-collection layer feeds the hero roster expansion, while the role-playing layer feeds character progression and ability customisation across the campaign.
The narrative scenarios follow the classical mythological time sequence. Players experience the Twelve Trials of Hercules, the Searching for Golden Fleece arc, and the Trojan Horse campaign in their proper historical order, which gives the campaign a coherent arc rather than disconnected mythological vignettes. Xuanjin Studio has invested in source-material research to support the narrative — the studio is explicit that the game is based on the Perseus stories, Metamorphosis, and Homer’s Epic, which signals serious engagement with the underlying texts rather than surface-level mythological flavour.
The Greek Mythology Adaptation and the Editorial Care
The mythological adaptation work matters because Greek mythology has been adapted into many games with varying levels of editorial seriousness. Some adaptations treat the pantheon as cosmetic flavour over generic fantasy mechanics; others engage with the source texts and let the mythological framework shape the gameplay design. Gods and Kings positions itself in the second category, with combat encounters and narrative beats drawn from specific mythological episodes rather than generic divine-versus-mortal conflicts.
The Titan-to-Olympian succession that opens the campaign — Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades ending the rule of the Titans, with Prometheus contributing the gift of fire to humanity — is straight classical mythology rather than adapted fantasy. Players familiar with the source material will recognise the references; players new to Greek mythology will leave the game with genuine familiarity with the narrative arc that western culture has built across millennia.

How It Compares to Other Card-Collection RPGs
It sits in the tradition of Slay the Spire for the deck-building roguelite framework, Marvel Snap for the modern card-collection RPG mainstream, and the broader category of free-to-play card-collection games that have dominated mobile and PC markets across the past decade. Gods and Kings differs from those benchmarks by committing to a specific cultural source material rather than building original IP. Players who appreciate Hades for its Greek mythology depth or who have played Age of Mythology will recognise the design philosophy.
The RPG, Strategy, and Free To Play genre tags reflect the design’s lineage. The Free-to-Play with DLC monetisation model targets long-term player retention rather than the single-purchase commercial transaction. The strategic positioning suits the genre — card-collection RPGs depend on ongoing content updates and community engagement more than launch-day polish, and Xuanjin Studio is signalling commitment to that long-term model.
The Rune System and the Magical Resource Economy
The Rune system is the design’s mechanical centrepiece. Rune serves as the magical resource that powers hero abilities, army summoning, and the higher-impact spell effects. Players manage Rune across encounters by balancing aggressive spending (more powerful effects but resource depletion) against conservative banking (saving for critical encounters at the cost of weaker moment-to-moment play). The Rune economy creates strategic decisions that pure card-play mechanics often lack, which gives Gods and Kings a deeper tactical layer than the surface card-collection framing suggests.
The combination of hero cards, army summoning, and Rune-powered magic produces the kind of layered combat that gives the release its identity. Players who engage with all three systems together find the mechanical depth rewards sustained play across the mythological campaigns.
The Cultural Source Material Commitment
For the broader Free-to-Play gaming category, Gods and Kings represents the kind of culturally-anchored offering that distinguishes serious card-collection RPG releases from generic mobile-style time-wasters. The Greek mythology source material gives Xuanjin Studio a coherent narrative framework that generic fantasy releases lack, and players who finish the campaign leave with familiarity with mythological narratives that western culture has built across millennia. The educational byproduct is real even if it is not the studio’s primary marketing emphasis.
Players who appreciate mythological storytelling in games and who have grown tired of generic fantasy frameworks will find Gods and Kings offers a cleaner editorial identity. The cultural specificity matters.
The Commercial Details
Gods and Kings is Windows-only at launch from Xuanjin Studio. The Free-to-Play download with DLC monetisation eliminates the financial barrier for trying the game while preserving the studio’s revenue model through optional purchases. The trade-off is the typical Free-to-Play tension — players need to evaluate whether the DLC pricing represents fair value for the content they actually want versus pay-to-win pressure that would undermine the core gameplay experience.
Xuanjin Studio has positioned the title as a free trial first and monetisation second, which is the more sustainable strategic positioning for card-collection RPGs.

Should You Play Gods and Kings?
Yes if card-collection RPGs are a comfort genre and you appreciate Greek mythology as source material. Yes if Free-to-Play monetisation does not deter you and you are willing to evaluate the DLC pricing on its merits. Yes if you have enjoyed Slay the Spire, Marvel Snap, or Age of Mythology and want another entry in adjacent design space. Less yes if you specifically prefer single-purchase commercial games or if Free-to-Play tension is a deal-breaker. For the card-collection RPG audience at zero entry cost, this is an easy recommendation to try — the financial risk is nothing and the mythological source material is well-researched.
