A dark visual novel by acclaimed creator nyalra. Overly sensitive to other people's emotions, the protagonist—a light novel writer—develops the ability to read
Content warning: This article discusses a game whose subject matter includes suicide, psychological abuse and self-destructive relationships. If any of that is difficult for you right now, this is a reasonable one to skip.
Sister Other Paranoia released on Steam on 14 August 2026, developed by HazeDenki and co-published with Serenity Forge. It is a dark visual novel from the Japanese creator nyalra, and it is not a comfortable one — which appears to be entirely the intent.
A writer who cannot stop hearing people
The protagonist is unable to bear the ugliness of the world and is terrified of other people. He develops the ability to read minds, which does nothing to help — it simply makes the contempt around him audible.
He shuts himself away and submits a light novel he has written, which unexpectedly wins a newcomer’s award. The jealousy and envy that follow only deepen his distrust of the few relationships he has left. HazeDenki’s framing is precise: those around him hurt his fragile heart without even realising it.

The relationship at the centre
His only remaining comfort is his younger sister, who lives with him. The store page describes the two as clinging to each other just to stay alive, sinking night after night into what it calls a twisted, unhealthy codependency.
The game does not present this as romance to aspire to. The language on the listing — twisted, unhealthy — is the developer’s own, and the work reads as a study of two people failing each other rather than an endorsement of the dynamic.
What the mind-reading is used for
This is the part prospective buyers most need to know before purchasing, and it should be stated plainly rather than buried.
The telepathy is not a puzzle mechanic. HazeDenki describe the protagonist using it to attack the deep-seated insecurities of people who anger him, with the explicit aim of driving them to suicide. That is the darkest thread in the game and it is central, not incidental.
Whether that works as literature or simply as cruelty is a judgment each reader will make. What is not in question is that this is a deliberately punishing piece of fiction about isolation and psychological harm, and it should not be bought expecting a conventional visual novel.

Presentation and platform
nyalra is an established name in Japanese alternative fiction, and Serenity Forge’s involvement as co-publisher signals a proper localisation rather than a machine-translated release. Language support covers English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.
This is single-player with Partial Controller Support and Family Sharing. There are no Steam Achievements and no Cloud saves listed. The build is Windows only. Steam genre tags are Adventure and Indie.

Price, and who this is actually for
Sister Other Paranoia is on Steam at $9.99 verified against the store listing on 15 August 2026.
One correction: this is not an upcoming title. It released on 14 August and is available now.
The audience for this is narrow and specific — readers who seek out bleak literary fiction and want it uncompromised. If that is you, the pedigree is real. For everyone else, and particularly for anyone for whom the subject matter sits close to home, this is a straightforward skip, and there is no shame in that.
