Survive the city’s hellish trials, meet tortured characters, and develop your own unique indentity. Every choice matters as your actions will literally shape you.
Everyone wears their past on their sleeve. Except you.
In Visceria, your appearance is shaped by your past. As a faceless, your past has been erased. Through surviving in this hellish city, you will meet characters and make choices that will shape you, developing your personality, appearance, and abilities.
Manage your resources, use dice to perform actions, and play to your personality’s strengths to survive in the city. Do what you must to survive, and try not to lose yourself in the process.
Everyone’s appearance is shaped by their past. Meet tortured characters and analyze their history by seeing their Mosaic, then use it to your advantage.
Your Choices Shape You.
Your mosaic starts out empty, then is shaped by your experiences. As you make choices, you will gain more parts of yourself. This will afffect your stats and abilities, as well as your appearance. Be careful, you can’t change the past after its happened!
Life in Visceria is twisted and painful, especially for a faceless like you. Try to hold onto your sanity while frequenting dirty ruins, slaughterhouses, decrepit bars, bloody hospitals, and more.

Dice-based RPG mechanics have become a distinct indie subgenre on Steam over the past several years. Games like Astrea: Six Sided Oracles, Dicey Dungeons, and the more recent wave of tabletop-inspired indies have proven that dice as core mechanics create genuine tension and replay value. Joy Malignant joins this lineage with a surreal narrative anchor that transforms dice rolls from pure randomness into character-defining moments.
The dual choice-shapes-skills-and-appearance system is a distinctive design commitment. Most RPGs let you choose skills OR appearance independently. Joy Malignant fusing the two means every decision has visible consequences on your character — your skills manifest in how the character looks. This is body-horror-adjacent character design used as a mechanical system.
Joy Malignant gameplay — dice, choices, and the cursed city
The store description reads: “A surreal dice-based RPG in a cursed city of gut-wrenching suffering. Here, your choices shape your skills and your appearance. Survive the city’s hellish trials, meet tortured characters, and develop your own unique identity. Every choice matters.”
Translated into practical Joy Malignant play: expect turn-based encounters resolved through dice mechanics, dialogue choices that unlock new skills or physical traits (and lock out others), exploration of a surreal cursed cityscape with themed environmental zones, and NPC encounters with characters who reflect the city’s suffering aesthetic. The “every choice matters” framing signals branching progression rather than linear character growth.
Dice-based RPG combat lives or dies on how well the design integrates randomness with player agency. Well-tuned, dice create meaningful tension — you take calculated risks based on odds. Poorly tuned, dice feel purely punitive. Petros Anastasiadis needs to hit this balance for the dice mechanic to feel rewarding rather than frustrating.
The choices-shape-appearance mechanic
Character appearance changing based on gameplay choices is a rare RPG design pattern. Most games separate cosmetic customization from mechanical progression. Joy Malignant fusing them means every mechanical decision has visible consequence — your character becomes the physical manifestation of the choices you have made.
This design pattern connects to body-horror philosophical traditions (Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Cronenberg’s films) where the physical transformation reflects internal change. In a cursed-city setting with “gut-wrenching suffering” framing, this design feels tonally correct — the city corrupts you visibly, and that corruption is your character build.
The surreal cursed city as setting
Surreal urban settings in RPGs allow environmental design freedom that realistic settings do not permit. When the city itself is cursed, buildings can defy physics, streets can rearrange between visits, and characters can exist in impossible states. This grants Petros Anastasiadis creative range that grounded fantasy or sci-fi settings would restrict.
The “gut-wrenching suffering” tonal commitment is intentional. Games that commit to specific difficult tones (Pathologic, Disco Elysium in its darker moments, Cultist Simulator) create memorable experiences precisely because they refuse to soften. Joy Malignant appears positioned in this “difficult but distinctive” register.
Joy Malignant and the Petros Anastasiadis developer profile
Petros Anastasiadis self-publishing Joy Malignant as a solo developer means every design decision reflects a single creative vision. Solo developers who commit to distinctive tonal registers and mechanical hooks (dice-plus-body-horror in this case) typically deliver more cohesive experiences than committee-designed titles.
Greek-origin indie developers have contributed some of the most memorable narrative-driven indie releases of the past decade. The willingness to commit to specific difficult tones without softening them for mass appeal is a design philosophy worth respecting.
Joy Malignant PC requirements and hardware compatibility
Adventure RPGs with stylized 2D art have minimal system requirements. Any Windows PC from the past 6-7 years should handle Joy Malignant without issue, including modest laptops and older desktops. Turn-based dice mechanics do not demand high framerates or high resolutions to function correctly.
Steam Deck compatibility should be excellent given the format. Turn-based RPGs pair perfectly with handheld play — the pacing suits both extended sessions and short bursts.
Similar surreal RPG and dice-based games worth exploring
If Joy Malignant appeals to you, adjacent Steam titles include:
- Disco Elysium — the modern narrative-RPG masterpiece with skill-check mechanics
- Astrea: Six Sided Oracles — dice-based deckbuilder roguelite
- Dicey Dungeons — dice-based roguelike from Terry Cavanagh
- Cultist Simulator — surreal narrative with occult atmosphere
- Pathologic 2 — surreal survival with distinct atmospheric commitment
Joy Malignant sits closest to Cultist Simulator in the surreal-narrative atmosphere and closest to Dicey Dungeons in the dice-mechanic implementation. The character-appearance mechanic is genuinely distinctive.
Should you buy Joy Malignant at launch?
For narrative RPG fans, dice-mechanic enthusiasts, and players who enjoy difficult atmospheric games, this is worth trying. The dice-plus-appearance design and cursed-city setting all suggest a game with genuine creative identity. Steam 2-hour refund window gives you room to test whether the specific tonal register works for you.
For players seeking accessible mainstream RPG experiences (Baldur’s Gate 3 accessibility, mass-market storytelling): adjust expectations. Joy Malignant appears designed for players who want distinctive, difficult experiences rather than crowd-pleasing narratives.
For players who loved Disco Elysium, Cultist Simulator, or Pathologic 2: Joy Malignant is likely to resonate strongly. The design philosophy is directly related.
