About DarkRay: Gameplay & Details

The city turned to ashes. The streets were empty. But underground — in ramified catacombs, flooded tunnels and forgotten bunkers — life goes on. An ugly, aggressive and deadly life.

You are an ordinary cat, thrown into the very epicenter of the disaster. There is no way up. Radiation, landslides and darkness cut off all exits. The only chance to survive is to go deeper and find another way out.

But you’re not alone there. A huge underground world

Explore a multi-level maze of catacombs, sewers, abandoned bunkers and flooded tunnels. Each zone has its own atmosphere, its own dangers and its own secrets. Some passages are hidden. Some are intentionally walled up. And it’s not always clear whether it’s from the outside or from the inside.

Stealth and escape

Mutated rats patrol the corridors. Huge spiders are weaving traps in dark corners. They’re not just dangerous, they’re smart. Use the cat’s natural agility and instincts: hide in the shadows, distract enemies with sound, squeeze through cracks inaccessible to anyone but you. Sometimes the best choice is not to fight, but to disappear. But if you’re spotted, run. Quickly.

Dungeon Puzzles

Old mechanisms, blocked floodgates, collapsed ceilings and mysterious symbols on the walls of bunkers — the underground world is full of obstacles that cannot be solved by force. Think, observe, experiment. Some puzzles hide the shortest path. Others are what it was better not to find.

An atmosphere without words

No text. No dialogs. Just you, the darkness, and the sounds of the dungeon. The story is told through the environment — graffiti on the walls, abandoned things, traces of those who were here before you. The world speaks for itself. You just need to learn to listen to him.

Nine lives. One way out. Endless darkness.

The Dark Atmospheric Setting and the Editorial Voice

The dark atmospheric setting anchors the design to distinctive visual identity where every environment carries meaningful narrative weight beyond decorative wrapping. The atmospheric commitment gives the design’s mechanical decisions meaningful narrative weight beyond pure abstraction, and players who engage with the setting seriously find their gameplay experiences resonating with the studio’s editorial vision across the campaign.

The tone sets DarkRay from generic action adventure releases that treat setting as decorative wrapper around gameplay mechanics. EuroGamesStudio has clearly invested in the atmospheric craft as primary editorial dimension rather than as budget compromise, and the consistency of that commitment supports the compound engagement that memorable indie releases sustain across long-form community retention.

Worth Adding to Your Library? — DarkRay

Yes if action adventure games are a comfort genre and you appreciate indie studio editorial commitment. Yes if you enjoyed Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, or contemporary action adventure releases and want another entry with distinctive editorial framing. Yes if atmospheric action-adventure with editorial commitment appeals to you as design commitment. Less yes if you prefer heavier production values or if action adventure design feels underwhelming for your preferences. For the action-adventure audience at affordable indie pricing, this is a confident recommendation.

DarkRay Verdict: 7/10 and Fits Its Category Well

DarkRay invites attention rather than pulling it forcibly, and that’s a distinction that matters in an oversaturated release calendar. The mechanical systems feel intentional.

DarkRay Design Philosophy

DarkRay’s design philosophy is visible in every screen: intentional systems, coherent presentation, and a clear sense of what the developer wanted the player to feel. That intentionality is what separates games worth recommending from games that merely function. Whether or not DarkRay is your next favorite depends on personal taste, but the craft is there for anyone paying attention. The kind of release that rewards close play rather than skimming.

DarkRay on Steam Deck and Handheld

DarkRay launches on Windows PC and is presumably targetable on Steam Deck via Proton. Deck-focused players should verify performance and controller mapping during the refund window. Many indie titles in this scope run acceptably on Deck even without official verification.

For non-Deck handheld hardware (ROG Ally, Legion Go), community threads in the Steam forums usually surface performance notes within a week of launch.
