Ashes of the Damned: The Forgotten Ward released on Steam on 19 August 2026 from Crimson Cloud Games. It is a first-person horror game set in an abandoned psychiatric ward, and it has one rule that shapes everything: there is no combat.

When something finds you, you run

You wake inside the ward with no memory of arriving. The exits will not open. The lights fail without warning. Something is moving through the asylum with you.

Crimson Cloud state the design plainly — there is no combat, and when something finds you, your only option is to keep moving. That removes the safety valve most horror games hand you. You cannot solve a threat, only outlast it.

Multiple floors, and clues left by patients

Exploration covers several floors — patient rooms, treatment areas, offices, communal wards and forgotten spaces. You follow clues left behind by the ward’s patients, solve its puzzles, and uncover your own connection to the place.

Tying the protagonist to the building rather than making them a visitor is the more interesting choice. It gives the exploration a reason beyond finding the exit.

A note on the setting

Abandoned-asylum horror carries obvious sensitivities, and it is worth being straightforward: this is a fictional psychiatric ward used as a horror setting, in a well-established subgenre.

The store page frames the patients as leaving clues and records rather than as monsters, which is a meaningfully better approach than the genre often takes. Even so, if psychiatric institutions are difficult subject matter for you, this is a reasonable one to skip.

A sparse listing — know what you are buying

The Steam feature set is minimal: single-player and Family Sharing, and nothing else. No Steam Achievements, no Cloud saves, no controller support.

For a horror game you may play in one or two sittings, absent cloud saves matters less than usual, but the lack of controller support is worth checking if you play horror on a pad.

The build is Windows only and English only, with full audio. A free demo is listed separately. Steam genre tags are Adventure and Indie.

Price, and how to try it first

Ashes of the Damned: The Forgotten Ward is on Steam at $7.99. The launch discount has ended and this is the standard price, verified on 6 September 2026.

Seven dollars is modest for a first-person horror game, and the demo means you can test whether the no-combat tension works for you before paying. That is the right way in — chase-based horror either grips you or frustrates you, and nothing in a description settles which.
